VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: David SedlaK

David has volunteered at Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve since 2018 and quickly made himself an indispensable part of our team. In fact, he was awarded our 2023 Volunteer of the Year!

David helps with anything and everything and always maintains an upbeat spirit. As a marathoner, he’s used to being outside in all weather, and always pitches in to help other volunteers and staff. He paints signage, pulls weeds, spreads pine straw along paths, helps with mowing, event setup and take-down. There’s nothing he can’t do! He is often accompanied by Ranger, who started visiting when he was a puppy, and who loves everyone he meets.

David’s wife, Mary, has also volunteered in the Woodland Garden, and is a remarkable quilter. Over the last few years, she and a few friends have donated gorgeous quilts to be auctioned at our fundraising events.

David started gardening because, “I love being outside. Gardening is great exercise.” He added that gardening and volunteering help him stay active, while also creating friendships with fellow volunteers. When asked if David would like to share anything with the community, he said, “It has been great volunteering at Creasey Mahan. Tavia and the staff have been very helpful to me, very informative, and a joy to work with. Also, we have a great group of volunteers with a wealth of gardening knowledge.”

The Staff and Board greatly appreciate David, Mary, and Ranger Sedlak, and are grateful for their selfless support.
