Where: Meet at the Nature Center
Join us at Creasey Mahan for a stroll through our meadows and pastoral hills to see some of our charismatic and vibrant Eastern Bluebirds in action! Along with seeing Bluebirds, we will observe and learn about other bird species, bluebird habitat, conservation, and our fantastic Kathy Dennis Bluebird Trail. Joining us on this hike are experienced birdwatchers and bluebird lovers Phil Tamplin and Wayne Kimbel, who will teach us in depth about bluebird boxes and raise awareness on the revival of the Kentucky Bluebird Society. The program will begin with Tamplin showing us a brief indoor slideshow presentation in the Nature Center!
Tamplin started on his bluebird journey in the late 1990’s after attending a meeting of the Kentucky Ornithological Association in Eastern Kentucky. The speaker was Dr. Wayne Davis, a biology professor at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Davis gave a bluebird presentation for the group, and at its end, he was a follower. He began building bluebird boxes and recruiting landowners to allow him to populate their farms with his boxes. The results were amazing with an immediate increase in bluebird numbers. This is truly a situation where ‘if you build it they will come’. Now, 25 years later, he has hundreds of boxes in the fields in Jefferson, Bullitt, Oldham, Shelby, Henry and Mercer Counties in Kentucky and Clark County in Indiana. Tamplin has given oral and visual presentations across Kentucky to civic and garden groups as well as bird clubs and other conservation organizations.
Kimbel is simply an enthusiastic beginner with regard to bluebird knowledge who enjoys trying to help by conveying his knowledge and love of the species. He has volunteered at several nature-based organizations over the past 10 years such as Bernheim and the Nature Conservancy which has fueled his desire to learn more and assist in the protection of all wild things.
